Sample Chapter: A QUESTION OF JUSTICE
They had been waiting for almost an hour for him. If they had not been preoccupied they would have been fuming. But they were poring over the crime statistics for the first half of the year: an average of one murder per day, one kidnapping per week, a staggering number of robberies and far too many sexual assaults. And this was only what had been reported. The number of convictions: zero. Things were bad on this island and the five young men who had gathered in this room were determined to do something about it.
Adrian apologized for being late – something about meeting a deadline at work. But it did not matter to them. They were too horrified by what they had just read.
‘Man gets six years for rape’. Jason read the headlines from a newspaper. His aggressive nature made him the natural leader of this group of twenty-something-year-olds. “What sort of madness is this?”
They all remained silent as he paced the living room.
“You saw the demonstration yesterday?” They all nodded. “Five hundred kids marching ten miles to protest the murder of their teacher. Sentimental, but not effective. We really need to do something that would cause people to stop and listen. We can’t let these criminals have us running scared. It is up to us. The future of T’nT is on our hands.”
He was emotionally charged. His yellow face was now red and his small oval eyes widened. He stood quietly for a moment trying to regain his composure.
“This is it, gentlemen. There can be no backing out now. Are you with me or not?” Silence. “Roderick?”
“I’m in.”
“Dexter?”
“Same here.”
“Nigel?”
“Sure, I’m with you guys.”
“And Adrian?”
He was the only one who had doubts about the plan. Maybe, as a school teacher, it was his nature to look at every side of a problem. Or maybe he was just scared. All eyes were fixed on him. His lips parted, his eyes squinted and he nodded, slowly, as if he were still trying to make up his mind.
“Count me in,” he said.
“Good,” Jason replied. “We’ll meet tomorrow night and I’ll give you details of the plan.”
The others sighed.
